Well, it is now less than two months until Star Wars Franchise returns to the big screen for the second time since 1977. Not including various re-releases of course. Not since 1999 when the ill-fated Prequel Trilogy premièred has the universal excitement for a single film been so palpable. After 38 years the Star Wars phenomenon is just as fresh and alive as it ever was. Very strange really and somewhat unprecedented.
But with this latest instalment, the seventh episode of the saga, sprung on us three years ago with the surprise sale of Lucasfilm to Disney, we are on the cusp of a new era of Star Wars, one likened to that of the highly successful yet clearly limited in terms of its shelf life, Marvel franchise. The bubble will burst.
Similar plans are a foot for Star Wars and why not? It was always meant to be a larger, expanded universe and yet it has taken 38 years to produce just seven movies in continuity. Granted, in recent years there have been several animated series, back in the 80’s there were Ewoks and Droids cartoons and the two Ewok Adventure TV movies but only seven, including December’s release, which met the high standards, at least of production values, of the first film.
So, as the third trailer arrives, the biggest and possibly most intriguing question is… where is Luke Skywalker? I hope that the explanation is worth the wait and intrigue. But besides introducing us to a set of brand new characters, something which the franchise needs, I was thrilled to see so much of Han Solo, Chewbacca and even a snippet of Leia.
Wrecked Star Destroyers, new yet classic TIE fighters and Kilo Ren’s intriguing Vader-esque villain is all just too tantalising. Cancel Christmas, Star Wars in coming a week earlier!
So, without further ado, here is the third and final trailer for Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
Oh, and I LOVED it by the way! As I have all three trailers to date.
