NOT A PART OF MY COLLECTION
May Contain Spoilers!
Will we be adding this to our collection? NO
This is an unambitious retread of so may rom-coms which have come before, but manages to vaguely emulate them with no flair what so ever. The characters, namely Emma (Natalie Portman) and Adam (Ashton Kutcher) are as flat as pancakes and without an ounce of chemistry try to convince us that they are friends with benefits who are fighting the urge to take the next step into a relationship.
That’s it, that’s the entire plot. Portman comes across as nasty rather than sassy and Kutcher is more passive, as they make their way through other people on their inevitable journey of discovery that they are deeply in love, but I just don’t buy it, sorry.
Perhaps with better casting, writing and direction this could have worked but without a more complex story we’re left with little to get a hold of, little to care about and what could have been saved by the cast was squandered by sheer laziness. The two leads don’t seem to care about what they’re doing. Maybe coming after Black Swan (2010) which Portman would win an Oscar, she felt that she was just too good for this sort of thing. Well, Oscar of no, she isn’t. But she ruined it by either being miscast or complacent.
There are plenty of better generic Rom-coms out there, I would go a seen any of those instead.
