FILM OF THE MONTH ~ JULY 2013

July has been a quiet month, with me contracting Chicken Pox (at 34!) and other family commitments, but the best of the bunch and the most surprising movie was The Three Musketeers (3D) (2011). Other interesting films but ultimately disappointing included the Orsen Welles’ classic, The Magnificent Ambersons (1942), The Wild Bunch (1969) and Teeth (2007). But on the plus side, we have Toy Story 2 (1999), The Patriot (2000) and the two strongest contenders, Silver Linings Playbook (2012), the second, second choice for Film Of The Month by David O. Russell this year, and Hitchcock’s classic, Vertigo (1958).

CANDLES 7

In the end, The Three Musketeers (2011), only the third film of the month not to be a part of our collection, Arthur Christmas (3D) (2011) and Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) being the other two, succeeded by being considerably better than it looked. It was ludicrous but fun and certainly memorable. Not a classic, not Shakespeare but it made its mark. A pleasant surprise and had the effect which I’m looking for in a film of the month. But I hope that there’s more to choose from in August…
