The first reviews for the up coming and highly anticipated Star Trek sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness are beginning to appear. The first of which that I have seen so far is from Total Film who gave it a very respectable four stars, saying:
“After a confident take-off, Abrams keeps the franchise flying with a faster, faster, FASTER sequel that makes for the most thrilling Star Trek since First Contact.”
My first thought is that it’s been held up against Star Trek: First Contact (1996), the second and best Next Generation movie, but what about Star Trek II (1982)? Is it that The Wrath Of Khan is just so good that it’s beyond comparison or was the reviewer suggesting that First Contact was the best one?
Personally, I’m hoping for the trend of the even numbered Trek films being the best to continue and after a shaky start, as far as I was concerned, from the 2009 reboot, that Star Trek may return in some way to what made Star Trek, Star Trek. Please be action packed, theatrical and exiting, but let’s just hope that J.J. Abrams has not forgotten, yet again, to inject the strong subtext present throughout the series but missing fro the last movie.
But I must admit, I’m not holding my breath…
Star Trek Into Darkness is out in U.K. cinemas on 9th May 2012.
