“Black proves the perfect blacksmith, forging smart new tech and scenarios for the swaggering super-genius. If this does turn out to be Downey Jr.’s final solo outing, it’s a very strong exit.”
Coming out back in 2008, alongside the seminal The Dark Knight (2008), it did take me some time to warm to Iron Man (2008), but when I did, I can see and enjoy it for it is and that is one of the more enjoyable entries and besides Ang Lee’s underrated Hulk (2003), is probably the best of the Marvel movies. But Iron Man 2 (2010) failed to impress, as it was little more than an overstuffed trailer for The Avengers (2012) mash-up, which is was the best, again after Hulk.
So I’ve been keen to see what 80’s/90’s action writer/director Shane Black, most notable for penning a string of action hits starting with Lethal Weapon (1987) and more recently black comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2006) would do with the project which so far had been cared for by Jon Favreau . The trailers look great, darker in tone and hopefully he will deliver a sharper, edgier movie than what has come before. DC Comics still rule the roost as far as I’m concerned of comic book movies, with more seminal releases than Marvel, so far at least, but The Avengers is a bold move and so far, it’s paying off.
…and is this one of the coolest IMAX posters that you ever seen?
