Step Up 4 is just the latest entry in the franchise which began back in 2006 with the Channing Tatum starrer, Step Up. But even though there have been tentative threads throughout the series, this has evolved it go anthology of dance stories, but let’s not kid ourselves, stories is a strong word. This is all about the dance and where these films let themselves down in when they take themselves too seriously.
Left to the dance routines, the Step Up series is at the top of its genre, with elaborate dance numbers a kin to those of the golden age of cinema, not literally of course but in the over the top attitude and perfectly choreographed set ups. The acting is at best, on par with a mediocre teen drama and at worse, down there with a day time soap opera, but generally the former, but if you let the music do the talking and the dancing do the performing, you might just have a good time. Puts the British made Streetdance films in their place, put it that way.
