8/10
I first saw this film back in 2002 and though, the scale was clear, it didn’t have a great impact on me. I could recognise that it was a great movie, but just not one for me.
Now, eight years on, I’ve completely come about. Spectacular! Spectacular! it truly is. Though “Romeo + Juliet” is still Baz’s best work, this is a grander exercise, with some of the best medleys I’ve ever heard, conveying the story well, and in many parts, with great emotion.
The story itself though is contrived nonsense, with no real weight or significance, but the performances are first rate, and I always have a lot of regard for actors who sing, which along with the music lifts the narrative up into something which is very enjoyable.
Overall, this was a spectacle and one of the most spectacular examples I have ever seen…
